Clyde Robert Grubb, 75, of Athens, died Tuesday, May 8, 2012, at Athens Regional Medical Center.
A native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was a son of the late Rev. Hubert F. and Lillie Mae Rogers Grubb, and was preceded in death by one son, John Hubert Grubb, on May 8, 1988; and one brother, James Grubb.
A 1955 graduate of McMinn County High School, he played football and baseball and served as co-captain of the football team in 1954. He was a graduate of Tennessee Wesleyan College, where he also played football for the TWC Bulldogs. He was a coach for the Babe Ruth Baseball League for several years.
He was principal at Idlewild Elementary School and Cedar Valley Elementary School in Meigs County. He taught physical education and was an assistant football coach at McMinn County High School for several years and also taught at Niota Elementary School.
An owner and operator of Henry Wilson Jewelry Store for more than 20 years, he was a member of the Athens Area Chamber of Commerce and the Downtown Business Association and was a former employee of Hydratane Gas Company.
A member of Idlewild Baptist Church, he had taught Sunday school at Walnut Grove Baptist Church and had served in the U.S. National Guard. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed all sporting activities.
Survivors include his wife, Beaulah Simmons O'Daniel Grubb; two daughters and sons-in-law, Gayle and Steve Stevison of Cleveland, and Debbie and Wayne Smith of Athens; three grandchildren, Jonathon Stevison, Bobby Smith and his wife, Chelsie, and Nikki Smith; two stepsons and their spouses, Ronald and Teresa O'Daniel of Decatur, and Rodney and Donette O'Daniel of Benton; three step-grandchildren, Tanner O'Daniel, Hunter O'Daniel and Jessica O'Daniel; six brothers and sisters-in-law, Frank Grubb, Jack and Oneida Grubb, Kenneth and Sheila Grubb, "Dip" and Jo Ann Grubb and Johnny and Glenda Grubb, all of Athens, and Wayne Grubb of Jefferson City; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Friday in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Scott Packett officiating. Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Idlewild Cemetery. The body will lie in-state at Idlewild Baptist Church from 10 to 10:45 a.m. prior to the graveside service.
Active pallbearers will be Harrill Lawson, Reed O'Daniel, Darrell Swafford, Gary Swafford, Todd Newman and Tanner O'Daniel. Honorary pallbearers will be Jonathon Stevison and Bobby Smith.
The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
