CHARLES A. THOMPSON, JR., age 87 of Athens, Tenn. died Monday, October 5, 2009, in McMinn Memorial Nursing Home in Etowah, Tenn.

He was a native and lifelong resident of McMinn County, Tenn., and a son of the late Charles Augustus Thompson, Sr. and Frances McDaniel Thompson.

He was preceded in death by Two Sisters: Jeanne Fagg, Edna Louise Thompson and Two Brothers: Hobert W. Thompson and Thurston L. Thompson.

He was a retired Superintendent of Power Operations of Athens Utilities and was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, where he and his wife served the UMYF as Counsler for 10 years and was a part of several Mission Trips to Haiti. He also was a leader of the Youth Mission Trip to Haiti in 1978.

He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U. S. Army as a Sgt. in the European Theater in the 32nd Signal Construction Battalion and was a charter member of National D-Day Museum.

Survivors: Wife of 62 years: Bertha Ellen Morgan Thompson of Athens, Tenn. Son: Mark Thompson of Nashville, Tenn.

Funeral services will be held 8:00 P. M. Tuesday in the Chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Brown officiating.

Interment will be 1:00 P. M. Wednesday in McMinn Memory Gardens. Active pallbearers will be Kent Wilson, Bill Schultz, Jimmy Wallace, Jim McCormack, Don Henry, and John Proffitt. Honorary pallbearers will be Howard Rountree, Edd Long, and retirees and employees of Athens Untility Board.

The family will recieve friends in Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home, Athens, Tenn. from 6-8 Tuesday.
