Garner Shelton, age 90, of Athens passed away Tuesday, September 5, 2023 at Woods Presbyterian Nursing Facility in Sweetwater. A native of Meigs County and lifelong resident of McMinn County, he was the son of the late John and Lou Ella Burnett Shelton. He was a member of Clearwater Baptist Church and worked for Hampton Construction. He was preceded in death by his son, Harold Shelton (Nov. 27, 2015), one sister and six brothers.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years Arveda Hampton Shelton of Athens; daughter and son-in-law, Willa and Steve Maxwell of Madisonville, son and daughter-in-law, Darrell and Starlingale of Greenback, daughter and son-in-law Lisa and Tommy Leamon of Athens; daughter-in-law, Dianne Snipes Shelton; 5 granddaughters and 3 grandsons, 17 great grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be 7 pm Thursday, September 7, 2023 in the chapel of Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home with the Rev. Mike Prock officiating. The graveside service will be at 10 am Friday, September 8, 2023 at Clearwater Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm Thursday before the service in the chapel.
