Girleen Howard, aged 87, passed away on October 16, 2024, at her home in Athens, TN. Born on February 13, 1937, Girleen was a beloved figure in her community, known for her caring nature and vibrant spirit. Girleen was a cherished wife to her late husband, Charles R. Howard (Bob), with whom she shared 38 wonderful years before his passing. She was a devoted mother to her daughter and son-in-law, Robin and Jeff Melton, and a loving grandmother to Ethan & Emili Melton and Karson & Dakota Roberts, and great-grandmother to Illah, Huk, and Ira. Her family circle also included her sister Juanita Shell, sister-in-laws Betty & Caroline Croft, and Alice Faye Hughes, as well as brother and sister-in-law Allan and Marilyn Howard. Her life was enriched by many beloved friends, nieces, and nephews.

Girleen was preceded in death by her brothers Jerry, Charles, and Hershel (Joyce) Croft, and her parents Reed and Marie Croft, as well as other cherished family members that include mother & father In law Ira & Carrie Howard, Brother & Sister in law Ken & Marsha (Howard)Shelton, Sister in Law Dorothy (Howard) Jones. Brother in law’s Jerry Hughes, Jimmy Howard, and Don Howard. She shared many familial bonds and friendships that were a testament to her loving personality.

Professionally, Girleen was industrious, working various industrial jobs before co-owning East TN Sod and Seeding with her husband Bob. Her work ethic and entrepreneurial spirit were admired by all who knew her.

Girleen was an active member of her community, attending Freedom & New Hopewell Baptist Church in Athens, TN. Her faith was a significant part of her life, guiding her through many of life’s challenges and joys.

Her hobbies included dancing, thrift store shopping, and sewing. She enjoyed spending time at the Senior Citizen Center and traveling with her friends and family. Girleen also had a fondness for watching Hallmark movies and indulging in Little Debbie cakes, which brought joy to her everyday moments.

Girleen Howard will be remembered for her loving heart, spirited personality, and the deep bonds she formed throughout her life. Her legacy of love and care will continue to inspire those who knew her.

Friends and family are invited to gather for a visitation on Friday, October 18, 2024 from 11:00am- 1:00PM. A graveside service will follow at 2:00 PM in McMinn Memorial Garden with Rev. Gary King officiating.

Pallbearers include Ethan Melton, Dakota Roberts, Mike Shell, Tillmon Devaney, Randy Croft, and Chris Torbett.
