Harold Joseph "Joe" Holliday, M.D., 79, of Athens passed away Monday, August 5, 2024 at his residence.
He was born on July 20, 1945 in Kessler, WV to the late Harold Holliday and Lila Holliday. After graduating from Ravenswood (WV) High School in 1963, he joined the United States Marine Corps where he served honorably for four years. He was a graduate of Austin Peay State University and a graduate of The University of Tennessee Medical School. He established his medical practice in 1983 in Athens, where he served the community for 41 years.
He was a loving husband to his wife, Vivian, for 56 years and a loving father to his three children. He was a beloved papaw to seven grandchildren. He was a faithful follower of Christ and reflected God’s love to his patients and regularly prayed with them. He was steadfast, loyal, humble, gentle, generous, kind, and a faithful steward of the resources entrusted to him by our Creator.
He is preceded in death by his sister, Jeannette Holliday, and his son-in-law, Todd Stephens.
He will be deeply missed by his surviving family: wife, Vivian Holliday; daughters, Susan Stephens and Cindy (Mitch) Bohannon; son, Brad (Olivia) Holliday; grandchildren, Eli Holliday, Darby Stephens, Gabe Stephens, Sam Bohannon, Boaz Bohannon, Maddie Holliday, and Kalei Holliday; and brothers, Jerry (Wanda) Holliday and Jeff Holliday.
A family graveside service will be held at McMinn Memory Gardens with the Reverend Wayne Bryant officiating. There will be no formal visitation, but a celebration of life event will be announced at a later date.
The family would like to extend a special thanks to his caregivers, Gentiva Hospice, and Dr. Walt Rucker for the loving care they’ve extended to him in recent weeks.
