Helen Josephine Brown

Helen D. Brown, age 93, of Englewood, passed away on                                       
Tuesday, October 16, 2018 at Grace Healthcare in Decatur.
A native and resident of Englewood most of her life, she was a daughter of 
the late Horace Calvin and Minnie Era Womac Dodson; and was 
preceded in death by her husband, Buster Eldred Brown on May 19, 1999
and a son-in-law, David W. Bull.
She was a member of Englewood First Baptist Church, where she had 
served as the organist and librarian since 1945 and in 2003, she received 
recognition from the National Federation of Music Clubs in honor of having 
served over 50 years as a church organist.  In 1994, she was chosen as 
McMinn County Mother of the Year and was a winner of the 2002 Covenant 
Platinum Award.
She was a founding member and project director of the Community Action 
Group of Englewood, since 1986 and in 2001 gave a presentation on 
Activities of CAGE at the National Humanities Convention in Indianapolis, 
Indiana.  She was a former teacher at Harrison Chilhowee Academy-1945-
1946; McMinn County School Librarian at Englewood School from 1947-
1986; project director of Englewood Textile Museum since 1994. She 
worked on getting historical preservation grants that resulted in the 
restoration of two buildings that house the museum, restoration of a turn-of-
the-century house which became an extension of the museum, and it was 
placed on the National Register of Historic Places, with funding to help in 
restoration.
She received her B. S. degree in 1945 from Carson Newman College and 
her M. S. degree in 1951 from the University of Tennessee at Knoxville. She 
was Co-editor of two Publications: in 1986 "The History of Englewood First 
Baptist Church 1972-1986" ; and in 1993, Co-editor of "Then and Now, The 
Women of Englewood's Textile Mills"; and in 2002 was Contributing Editor 
of " Women of World War II", a companion piece for a Smithsonian 
exhibition, "Produce for Victory".
Also, she was a member of American Association of State and Local 
History,Tennessee Association of Museums, Charter Member Tennessee 
Overhill Heritage Association, and Tennesseans for the Arts. 
A retired member of the National Education Association, she served as 
secretary of Tennessee Education Association- School Library Section in 
1971, Vice-Chairman-Tennessee Librarian Association 1972, and Chairman TLA in 1973, McMinn County 
Education Association, and served on the board of Fort Loudon Regional 
Library, American Association of Retired People, East Tennessee 
Postcard Club, Etowah Thursday Music Study Club, retired member of 
McMinn County Senior Citizens and served on the Board and a member of 
Retired Seniors Volunteer Program in McMinn and Meigs Counties. 

Survivors, two daughters, Karla (Frank) Riddle of Chattanooga and Lisa 
Brown of Englewood; one son, Gregory Brown of Olympia, Washington;
five grandchildren, Brian (Anneli) Riddle of Stockholm, Sweden, Jessica 
Riddle and Vanessa Riddle both of Chattanooga, David Bull of 
Englewood, and Joshua Brown of Knoxville; four great-grandaughters, 
Jolene Riddle and Olivia Riddle, of Stockholm, Sweden, Ashley 
McDonough and Lindsey McDonough, of Chattanooga.

Funeral services will be 3:00 PM Sunday, October 21, 2018 at Englewood First Baptist Church with the Eulogy by Geoff Holden, Rev.  Russ Maples and Jessica Riddle.
Interment will follow in Cochran Cemetery.  Active Pallbearers will be                              
Kenny Dickson, Doyle Barnett, Gene Carter, Tommy Davis, David Bull, Mike Cochran.
The family will receive friends from 1:30-3:00 PM prior to the service at the church.
