Roy Eugene Grimes

Roy Eugene Grimes, Sr of Athens, Tennessee; affectionally known to many as “Paw,” went home to be with his Lord Jesus Christ on January 11, 2025. He passed away peacefully in the arms of his beloved wife Frances after 63 years of marriage.

Roy was born on July 10, 1940, to Ollie and Mary Grimes in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

Roy acquired his Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Tennessee and began a 50+ year professional career in engineering.

In 1961, Roy and Frances Carol Bailey were married on May 30, 1961, in Chattanooga, TN. Roy and Frances have 2 children, Roy E Grimes, Jr (Carrie) and Tammy Coffelt (Greg).

He was a member and deacon of Wildwood Baptist Church in Englewood, TN where he served for 44 years.

Roy was a devoted and passionate Tennessee Vols Fan.

He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Lester and his sister Lourine Clark. He is survived by two sisters, Mary Gibson of Midlothian, VA and Elizabeth Gibbs (Leonard) of Elizabeth City, NC.

He is survived by two grandsons Brandon Carder (Heather) of Hixson, TN and Patrick Grimes of Chattanooga, TN; two great-grandchildren, Adalee and Judson; as well as many cherished nieces and nephews.

He was beloved father figure to Jeff Masingill of Chattanooga, TN; Sandy Ward of Athens, TN and a beloved grandfather figure to Haley Young (Logan) of Cleveland, TN.

Receiving of friends will be held at Laycock-Hobbs Funeral Home, 521 N. Jackson St Athens, TN from 5:00 - 7:00 PM of Thursday, January 16, 2025. Funeral Services will be held at Wildwood Baptist Church 1045 Highway 39, Englewood, TN beginning at 10:00 am on Friday, January 17, 2025. Interment to follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery, Athens, TN.
